8 October 2025: From stories of UFO sightings along the Extraterrestrial Highway and haunted historical mining towns to the world-famous Clown Motel, Travel Nevada invites curious travellers to explore the mysterious side of the Silver State with the launch of the Paranormal Passport 2.0.
Nevada is referred to as the weirdest, wildest West for a reason! Between a little government facility by the name of Area 51, mannequin cities built just for atomic bombing, multiple haunted hotels and a handful of offbeat museums, the Silver State is a hotbed of otherworldly experiences.
Paranormal encounters, alien lore and ghostly legends combine to create a holiday experience like nowhere else. Here are some of Nevada’s most unique and unusual scare-attractions not to be missed:
EXTRATERRESTRIAL
Welcome to Alien Country. While the U.S. government will neither confirm nor deny the rumours of alien spacecraft, top-secret technology, or little green figures on the payroll, one thing is certain, a drive along the wide-open desert roads under starlit skies makes it clear why “visitors” might travel light-years to be there. Along the way, travellers can discover alien-themed pit stops, legendary landmarks like the Black Mailbox and Little A’Le’Inn, and locals ready to share an out-of-this-world tale, or two.
For evidence of extraterrestrials head to the Little A’Le’Inn. Chat with locals to get the inside scoop, like where to spot a UFO and what’s really up with Area 51 over an Alien Burger and a slice of alien-fruit pie. Then just down the Extraterrestrial Highway visit the Alien Research Center, gleaming in the desert sun like an actual spaceship, this silver Quonset hut and its two-story silver alien security guard serve as a deacon welcoming the supernatural. For an afternoon refuel and debrief stop by E.T. Fresh Jerky. Nevada also has some seriously dark skies, portions of which have even been recognised by DarkSky International. Gaze upward to spot any UFOs in Rachel, the closest town to Area 51.

HAUNTED
From alien encounters to lingering spirits, the Silver State is considered one of the most supernaturally active places in the country by paranormal experts and enthusiasts alike. From spirit-filled saloons and storied cemeteries to multiple hotels where legendary guests never checked out, discover places and tales where even non-believers will be second guessing.
The Goldwell Open Air Museum puts the “ghost” in “ghost town.” Originating in the 1980s by Belgian artist Albert Szukalski, its plaster ghosts form a spectral tableau of Da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.” These haunting installations enchant thousands of international visitors heading to nearby Rhyolite Ghost Town and Death Valley National Park.
Stop by Tom Devlin’s Monster Museum in Boulder City. Curated by an award-winning special makeup effects artist, the museum celebrates horror movie icons through screen-used props, life-size figures, and an on-site screening room. For those that are up for a scare, check out Zak Bagans’ The Haunted Museum in Downtown Las Vegas which features 30 rooms jam-packed with some seriously spooky artifacts, some of which are rumoured to be the world’s most haunted objects.
Virginia City’s Washoe Club & Haunted Museum is one of the most haunted places in the West. Take the tour to hear stories about the Millionaires Club, reported hauntings and tales from the historic crypt.
Pioche was once more rough-and-tumble than Tombstone and Dodge City, and it has the spirit sightings to prove it. Check into the Overland Hotel & Saloon, where ghostly companions are complimentary with every stay.
The Clown Motel in Tonopah boasts one of the largest private collections of clown figurines and memorabilia under the sun. If the creepy clown theme isn’t enough to spook, the added bonus of nightly spirits slinking across from the cemetery next door might just do it. Or for those who prefer to stay clear of eerie clowns, head to The Mizpah Hotel, where The Lady in Red, arguably Nevada’s most famous ghost, is known to whisper sweet nothings in ears and leave pearls under pillows. Guests have reported hearing phantom children playing in hallways, and staff have stories about two men who still reside in the basement.
