The Jennings Hotel brings big city design to small town Oregon
Greg Hennes bought The Jennings Hotel in Joseph, OR five years ago and continues to revive the 1910 property into an esthetic and experience guests would expect to find in downtown Portland, not a tiny town in Eastern Oregon. The property offers twelve design-forward rooms, a communal kitchen, lounge and library, and sauna. Downstairs, Hennes has reclaimed The Gold Room, a restaurant and saloon for over 40 years, and attracted chefs Ross Effinger and JoMarie Pitino from Portland to open a 49-seat wood-fired pizza, pasta and craft cocktail restaurant in Fall 2019. Small County, a curated store selling home and design items featured throughout the hotel will also open and house Hennes’ true passion project – Prairie Mountain Folk School; a centre for traditional craft open to visitors and resident artisans to learn wood working, weaving, blacksmithing and Japanese timer framing, to name just a few. www.jenningshotel.com
Fore! Reversible Golf & “Goat” Caddies
An authentic Western ranch and eco-retreat located in the remote frontier region of Eastern Oregon, Silvies Valley Ranch offers a few modern twists to its guest experience. Yes, it has 34 luxurious accommodations, fine dining, a full-service spa and Western adventures like cattle round-ups and horseback riding. But, it also offers four award-winning golf courses, including the first reversible course built in over 450 years (since the Old Course at St. Andrews). On odd-numbered days, golfers play clockwise on the premiere course (Hankins Course) and counter-clockwise on even days (Craddock Course). In addition, two of Silvies’ 1,700 American Range goats, “Bruce LeGoat” and “Mike LeChevon,” offer goat caddie service on McVeigh’s Gauntlet, a 7-hole ridge course, and Chief Egan, a mountain meadow 9-hole par 3 course. www.silvies.us
Coming in for a Landing
“This is the Mark Wahlberg Room,” jokes Karin Tsiatsos, owner of The Landing Hotel & Dining in La Grande, OR. Wahlberg was a recent guest of the hotel while filming an upcoming movie about the lives of La Grande father and son Joe and Jadin Bell. La Grande is the gateway to Eastern Oregon, and The Landing Hotel & Dining offers overnight accommodation to travellers headed into the extraordinary Eagle Cap Wilderness and beyond. Located in the heart of La Grande’s historic district in a 1900s heritage house, The Landing Hotel & Dining was lovingly restored by Tsiatsos and her husband with a sophisticated, contemporary flair. Five beautifully appointed, rustic-chic rooms are available to guests as well as a wine bar with café and lounge serving breakfast and light bites. www.lagrandelandinghotel.com
